Every Festive Day is Boxing Day!

Boxing clubs throughout the nation have opened their doors throughout the Christmas holiday to train and feed disadvantaged children - all thanks to funding from Maverick Stars.

Following the success of the Holiday Hunger/Fit and Fed programme's that were rolled out during the summer holidays, the festive period offered the chance to reach out to more young people who may otherwise have nowhere to go and little to eat.

Each gym runs its own bespoke programme, but all offer at least an hour's training followed by a nutritious meal free of charge. Participants that complete a series of training tasks are awarded a Police and Community Clubs of Great Britain certificate and t-shirt.

Boxing Clubs involved in the initiative include: Moss Side Fire Station (pictured), Kirkdale, Jennings, Inner City, South Wye Police, North Road, Odells, Leam Lane, Seaham, Gemini, Billingham, Lee Jones and Unity.

South Wye – Fit Fed and Ready to Rumble

Another Maverick Stars project is underway with 'Fit and Fed' up and running at South Wye Police Boxing Academy.

For the duration of the summer holidays, our funding is helping children aged 11-16 to enjoy an hour of training every day followed by a nutritious lunch. Those that complete boxing training tasks will be awarded a Police and Community Clubs of Great Britain certificate and t-shirt.

The initiative is being run with the help of Herefordshire Council and West Mercia Police.

Warrington Phoenix Fire Fit and Fed project excels in its second year

For the second year running Warrington Pheonix Fire Boxing club housed within the Warrington Fire and Rescue station has engaged in the national “Fit and Fed” pioneered by Street Games.

Damian Ridpath, Head coach, said: “After trialling the programme last year we found that there was a real demand for young people in and around our club to partake in daily healthy activity whilst ensuring they were also receiving a nutritious lunch during their school holidays”

25 young people attend the club and receive a healthy lunch prepared by the local “Live Wire” leisure trust. Tom Mellor and Elliot Dillon coach the young people each day. Tom remarked that

“It has been terrific to work with these young people during their summer holiday. They age from 7-14 years and they and their families are very grateful for the fitness sessions, lunch and community visits that are all provided free of charge. It has also given us the opportunity to provide opportunities for some of our teenage Junior leaders from the club to volunteer with some of the younger fit and fed group”

The newly formed Maverick Stars Trust based in Cheshire is funding the programme by paying the coaches for their work and also paying for all of the lunches. Warrington Borough Council are another valued partner as they are assisting in transporting some of the participants to the club.

Ron Tulley, Head of Community Development at England Boxing visited the programme on Wednesday 15th August. He said,

“It is great to see so many young people involved in rigorous boxing fitness activities lead by highly qualified coaches. On top of the great fitness work and healthy lunch, they are also engaging in visits to local areas of interest. As the kids finished their lunch they were off for a visit around the Warrington Wolves stadium and hopefully meeting some of the rugby league stars soon to be fighting for the Challenge Cup. The stereotypical image of teenagers on summer holidays is one of sitting on their sofas playing with consoles, this could not be more different”

Of the 25 regular attendees, 15 are new to the club and are already considering becoming full time club members as the new season approaches.

Fishergate – Reels them in

A fantastic new initiative at Fishersgate Amateur Boxing Club is proving a big hit with people living with Parkinson's disease.

Research has shown that boxing can improve symptoms of Parkinson's, helping those diagnosed with the disease to maintain higher levels of function and quality of life. That fact wasn't lost on Nick Clark, a coach at the Brighton club, who set up the programme with funding help from Maverick Stars Trust.

Leaders Abraham Moss

Success for “Sting like a Bee” Leaders

A unique initiative which uses boxing gyms to provide opportunities for young people, is celebrating its first group of successful new "leaders'. Ten participants graduated from the course at the Collyhurst and Moxton boxing gym - and received their certificates at a ceremony attended by champion fighters Zelfa Barrett, Lyndon Arthur, and fighter - turned - trainer Thomas McDonagh.

The young people aged between 14-16 and all pupils at Abraham Moss high school in Crumpsall - completed first aid, safeguarding and child protection, along with a 'police community clubs of Great Britain' Olympic boxing leadership award.

The qualifications are part of the maverick stars "sting like a bee" programme which is aimed at tackling anti-social behavior and the knife -crime epidemic. Each of Greater Manchester's ten boroughs now has at least one designated "Maverick" gym which has received funding and support from the charity to help engage and inspire the most "at-risk" young people.

special guest speakers, mentors and external visits to places including: safety Guide, Challenge4Change and Street Doctors, are available for each gym.

Debut For Wimborne ABC ‘Girls in Gloves’

The 'Girls in Gloves' boxing initiative - funded by Maverick Stars - has two more success stories from Wimbourne ABC.

Thanks to the programme, which aims to help tackle mental health problems and raise female participation levels in boxing, more girls are now competing in the sport. Grace Shire, 13, and 14 year old Gabby Strange are the latest to have their first bouts this weekend.

Jamie’s Dream Edges Closer

Maverick Stars, working alongside fighter-turned-trainer Jamie Moore, have been given the green light to go ahead with plans to open a boxing club in Salford.

Walkden ABC will take its place within a unit at the Walkden Shopping centre that will also cater for other youth activities delivered by Salford Community Leisure.

Many hurdles have been overcome to get to this stage of the process, and Jamie, a Maverick Stars ambassador, is delighted the plan is nearing fruition: "It's been nearly three years in the making," he said. "Walkden has the same problems as other areas but it's never had an amateur boxing gym.

"Kids are hanging around the shops and they have no real direction. The gym will go a long way to helping to fix these problems. If it changes just one kid's life, it'll be worth it."

East Brighton Fit and Fed

East Brighton ABC – Fighting Fit on the Coast

Another Maverick Stars project has cooked up a storm with East Brighton's 'Fit and Fed' project proving a huge hit.

Maverick's funding helped children aged 11-16 to enjoy an hour of training every day followed by a nutritious lunch.  Those that completed the boxing training and other tasks were awarded certificates of achievement.
