Competition Winners - Jane Couch MBE Signed Book

Nobody has done more for women’s boxing in recent times than the incomparable Jane Couch MBE.

The ‘Fleetwood Assassin’ battled the authorities to win the right for women to box legally in the UK. She paved the way for the Olympians and current world champions to ply their trade.

Jane was crowned world champion five times and took on the very best – often fighting at short notice with little or no recompense - during a pro boxing career that stretched from the mid-90’s to 2008.

Following a competition across social media, Maverick Stars Trust is delighted to announce the following have won a signed copy of Jane's book 'The Final Round':

Caricatures For Our Ambassadors

Caricatures For Our Ambassadors

Maverick Stars Trust's ambassadors have been made into caricatures, in a bid to promote their work with the charity across social media.

Ellie Jack Illustrations has created seven images, starting with Team GB's Delicious Orie.

Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, DJ was raised in Wolverhampton from the age of seven.

He only started boxing at 18 whilst at university, under the guidance of Mick Maguire at the Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in Birmingham.

Since then, exciting amateur Conner Tudsbury and Wimborne ABC's Dave Rimmer have featured.

Conner spends most of his time with Team GB in Sheffield, but regularly visits his amateur club, Moss Side Fire Boxing Club, to help out with sessions for youngsters.

Dave has launched the 'Athlete Academy' in Dorset, allowing young fighters to continue their education alongside the sport.

Still to come are brilliant cartoons of Chantelle Cameron, Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis, completing the images of our ambassadors who do great work in the community.

Unsung Hero – Ben Lancaster

Unsung Hero - Ben Lancaster

Each week we pay homage to a boxing ‘unsung hero’. The lifeblood of the sport - the men and women who have contributed so much and asked for so little, who have saved lives and transformed futures.

This week our attention turns to a man that spends most of his time in a shed in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

A gym set up in his back garden has been the home to national and international champions, and before that thirty years at Boarshaw ABC saw success after success.

We spoke to one of those who benefitted from his tutelage, Maverick Stars Trust coach and former professional fighter Danny Wright.

“Over the last forty years, he’s had thirty odd national champions,” he said. “He’s been a great role model to hundreds of kids, and he’s a very funny guy as well!

“He took me from a nine-year-old to a senior national title and boxing for England numerous times.”

Ben's selfless guidance came outside the gym as well, working to keep young adults in the sport alongside their studies.

“He was a tutor at Hopwood Hall when they had a boxing college there,” he said. “Ben helped young people leaving school have a pathway so they could have a further education but stay involved in boxing.”

Jazza Aims for Redemption

Jazza Aims for Redemption

Jazza Dickens is confident redemption will be his when he fights for the vacant IBF featherweight world title.

The Liverpudlian is set to face Kid Galahad in the coming months, eight years after he was stopped by the Ingle trained fighter for the British title.

Jazza, who is working on an initiative to help families of addiction with Maverick Stars Trust, believes the time is right for him to finally get his hands on major honours.

"By fighting the only man to have me on the floor, that redemption story is something that makes it more exciting," he said.

"I'll show my family and supporters what it takes, the hard work it takes to turn something around like that and believe in yourself. If you keep believing in yourself, you can do anything you want."

Free School Meals in Hull from Monday

Free School Meals in Hull from Monday

Former Commonwealth champion Tommy Coyle is joining the fight against hunger, as he prepares to give out free meals to children in Hull.

Working in partnership with Maverick Stars Trust, Coyle joins the programme which already has support from the likes of Anthony Crolla and Jamie Moore.

With the scheme already a huge success in the North-West, the link up ensures even more youngsters will be fed whilst they are off school.

"We've done relatively well in the lockdown with retail because a lot of people have shopped locally," he said. "We're the owners of three or four different fruit and veg stalls, and it doesn't sit right with me that we've profited from these tough times.

"I feel like it's the right thing to do, to try and give back where I can."

Lockdown Sessions for Local Schools

Lockdown Sessions for Local Schools

Walkden ABC has been providing basic boxing lessons to schools in the area, to keep pupils active during the latest lockdown.

Maverick Stars' coach Danny Wright has put together six sessions teaching key skills in the sport, mixed in with intense fitness sessions.

Working with Walkden Co-op Academy and other surrounding schools, the lessons will give those who take part a head start if they take up boxing when Jamie Moore's amateur boxing club in the area can finally open its doors.

The first session was launched on Thursday with an introduction to the boxing stance, before pupils will learn how to throw and defend both the jab and back hand over the next few weeks.

Alongside this, coach Wright will continue to run sessions at the Co-op Academy for year 7 pupils.

Unsung Hero – Jimmy Lewis

Unsung Hero - Jimmy Lewis

Unsung Hero - Someone who does a great job but receives little or no recognition for it.

That, by definition, is Jimmy Lewis.

Founder of Fox ABC in 1978, Jimmy has helped thousands of kids from Manchester to find the right path in life.

"All the young lads coming through, they remind me of the lads from years ago," he said. "They all put hard work in, we make sure they do and we make sure they behave themselves."

The club had struggled to find a new home since a fire destroyed their old premises last year, but with the help of Maverick Stars Trust, they have relocated to Avro FC in North Manchester.

"I couldn't believe it when I came to see how much has been done," he said. "An unfortunate situation with the fire has turned out brilliantly."

Anthony Crolla has called the Fox home throughout his boxing career, and the work he did with Jimmy as a young fighter is a big part of the successes he had in his career.

"He's dedicated over 40 years of his life helping kids in the area," he said. "It means a lot to me to see what it means to him."

Lending a Hand

Lending a Hand

He may be making great strides with Team GB, but a Manchester gym will always be home for a man helping the next generation.

Conner Tudsbury has been back at Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club from his Sheffield base, and as we've been finding out, he's never afraid to get stuck in and lend a hand.

A Maverick Stars ambassador, Conner's success has inspired the next generation of young fighters at his gym.

"It's a really great thing to hear," he said. "I want to succeed because I want to show them it's possible to come from Moss Side or round here, or from an amateur boxing gym, and actually achieve something that's your dream."

Bash Khaliq, one of his amateur coaches, heaped praise on the influence Conner has had on youngsters in Moss Side.

"He's a very good role model for a lot of the kids round here," he said. "If Conner can do it, it encourages other kids to stay in the sport instead of going off the rails."

Conner had been working with kids in the gym pre-lockdown, and is eager to get going again once restrictions are relaxed.

Steven Ward Ready for ‘The Mountain’

Steven Ward Ready for 'The Mountain'

Steven Ward has weighed in for his clash with the former 'World's Strongest Man' Hafthor Bjornsson.

A friend of Maverick Stars Trust, Ward is giving away a staggering 126lbs for the exhibition clash on Friday night in Dubai.

'The Quiet Man' is trained by Maverick ambassadors Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis, and still has big ambitions as a professional in 2021.

The fight is part of 'The Mountain's' preparation for a bout with fellow former 'World's Strongest Man' Eddie Hall.

Gym Lessons for Young Dorset Boxers

Gym Lessons for Young Dorset Boxers

Despite challenging circumstances, Wimborne ABC have managed to successfully launch their 'Athlete Academy'.

Working in Partnership with Maverick Stars Trust and LeAF Studio School, head coach Dave Rimmer has created a unique boxing programme for fighters in school years 9-13.

The initiative gives participants not only expert guidance in boxing, but also the training needed to one day become coaches themselves.

The students have sessions at Wimborne ABC factored into their curriculum (Tuesday 2-4 and Friday 2-4), allowing them to get vital extra tutelage throughout the week.
