Life Saver!!

A Maverick Stars Ambassador has been speaking of the importance of CPR and defibrillators after being called into action when a gym member suffered a cardiac arrest.

Wimborne ABC head coach Dave Rimmer performed CPR on Zoe Cluett after she collapsed during a training session. Dave continued to implement his first aid skills and called for the club's defib, which was then put to use.

Thankfully, all efforts were successful and Zoe's pulse and breathing returned. An otherwise fit and healthy 36-year-old, Zoe was back in the gym to see her friends just three weeks later.

Maverick Stars has launched the campaign 'Keep the Beat', providing vital defibs to fifty boxing gyms nationwide. The campaign, spearheaded by our ambassador April Hunter, is in conjunction with PGCPR.

Brad's Ready for Next Steps

Maverick Stars ambassador Brad Rea is looking to make a statement when he faces Craig McCarthy on the undercard of Amir Khan v Kell Brook.

Brad, who has a perfect record of eleven fights, eleven wins, takes on his fellow unbeaten fighter at a packed AO Arena. It'll mark a big step up for a man who also works as a coach for Maverick Stars when his punishing training programme allows.

Coaching has always been a part of Brad's boxing life and the Stretford man attributes much of his success in the ring to his ability to train other fighters

Hunting for Redemption

April Hunter is desperate to get back in the ring with the woman who ended her perfect record. Kirsty Bavington was victorious when the pair met in October last year, and it is a defeat that still rankles the Maverick Stars ambassador.

It has been a whirlwind few months for April since that night at the Newcastle Arena. The Geordie welterweight has switched camps from trainer Joe McNally in Liverpool to the Cheshire base of Peter Fury. The move has enabled her to train alongside world champion and friend Savannah Marshall on a daily basis.

The Geordie fighter believes huge improvements have already been under Fury’s guidance, and she cannot wait to showcase her skills in a rematch with Bavington.

“I’m on another level to Kirsty Bavington and I genuinely believe that,” said April. “I’m confident in my talent. It was a blip, I’ll put it right. I’m not being cocky or arrogant, I just genuinely believe that.”

‘Keep the Beat – Maverick’s Restart a Heart’ aims to raise awareness of CPR techniques along with donating 50 defibs to amateur gyms nationwide. The initiative is headed up by the charity’s ambassador April Hunter who lost her cousin and best friend Paul Gardner to cardiac arrest in 2018.

Middleweight titlist Savannah said: “I know many amateur clubs that just run on donations and funding; they don't even charge the boxers, so all these things help. They're [defibrillators] a lot of money so I can't imagine there'd be many clubs with the funding for their own. “

Sudden cardiac arrest in young people – including high-profile athletes – has increasingly been making headlines in recent years. Each year in the UK there are more than 30,000 ‘out-of-hospital’ cardiac arrests. The survival rate is less than one in ten. In some cases, performing CPR can more than double the chances of survival.

“To this day, I’ve really struggled with depression about him [Paul]. It’s a battle every day,” said April. “When Paul passed away, it could have been a simple thing of putting him on his side and clearing his airways and he might still be here today.”

Maverick Stars Trust is now committed to providing 50 defibrillators to amateur boxing clubs most in need. It will help meet the requirement that every England Boxing member club will need to have access to and know how to use a life-saving defibrillator by 1st June 2022.

Helping to educate and enable people to act when an incident occurs is a cause close to the heart of Maverick ambassador April Hunter, whose family has established the charity PGCPR, which has set up a free app that assists in delivering CPR.

The Geordie boxer’s cousin, Paul Gardner, died on his 24th birthday while on holiday in 2018 and April has campaigned for better CPR awareness ever since.

“He (Paul) was in Ibiza with his friends and he got into difficulty in the water,” April explained. “He was the only one who knew CPR. He was still breathing; his heart was still beating when he was out of the water.

“Even if someone knew CPR, you never know, but it would have been nice if someone there had given him the best chance. I want to highlight the importance of CPR and defibs.”

April’s friend and training partner Savannah Marshall has also pledged her support to the Maverick Stars defib campaign. The middleweight world champion attended a recent meeting to launch the campaign alongside football legend and Maverick ambassador Shay Given.

Fabulous Fergo

Fabulous Fergo

Steven Ferguson claimed his first senior title after a thrilling battle in the Merseyside and Cheshire Elite ABA final. On a great night of boxing at Croxteth Sports Centre, the 26-year-old Maverick Stars ambassador, who has battled back from drug and alcohol addictions, came out on top against Old Swan ABC’s George Howden.

It was give and take for much of the first round until a bit right hand from Howden resulted in a standing count for 'Fergo'. The Marybone ABC fighter quickly recovered and turned things around in the second round, scoring with clinical hooks and upper cuts. The third round was another hard-fought affair, with both men having successes, but the Kirkby man came out on top via split decision.

The victory marks an incredible turnaround for Fergo who struggled with addiction issues after leaving the army. With the help of Tom Harrison House - an initiative supported by Maverick Stars - he rediscovered his love for boxing under the guidance of Derry Mathews.

It will be something of a dream come true for Steven Ferguson when he boxes in the Merseyside and Cheshire elite ABA final this weekend. The 26-year-old Maverick Stars ambassador is focussed on a career in the ring after overcoming drug and alcohol addictions.

'Fergo' boxed as a youngster, but after a six-year spell in the army, his life descended into chaos. With the help of Tom Harrison House - an initiative supported by Maverick Stars which assists armed forces veterans struggling with addiction - he returned to the gym under the guidance of coach Derry Mathews, has lost four-and-half stone and is set to compete in his first senior title fight at super-heavyweight.

The Kirkby man said: "I'm boxing a lad called George Howden from Old Swan ABC in the final. It's always been my dream to be a boxer. Even when my life was chaos, I always believed I'd get back to boxing one day. I just want to experience as much as possible in the ring now."

Chantelle Cameron is one win from becoming undisputed world champion after beating Mary McGee to add the IBF title to the WBC belt she already held.

Both women played their part in a stunning fight, but it was the Maverick Stars ambassador who shone brightest taking a unanimous points decision at the O2 Arena.

The performance justified the top-of-the-bill slot on the Matchroom card and Chantelle will now face the winner of Jessica Camara and Kali Reis - who fight on 19 November in the USA - to decide the undisputed champion.

Delicious 'DJ' Orie

There were mixed fortunes for our Maverick Stars ambassadors at the World Championships in Serbia over the weekend.

Manchester's Conner Tudsbury followed up his opening round victory with a sensational performance against Rogelio Romero. The 21year old product of Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club, controlled his contest against the vastly experienced Mexican Olympian from the first bell.

Meanwhile, it was disappointment for Delicious Orie who narrowly missed out on a place in the last eight, losing on points in a competitive bout against Lazizbek Mullojonov of Uzbekistan. DJ can exit his debut World Championships with his head held high. It promises to be a big year for the man who learned his trade at Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in Birmingham.

For Conner, it's on to the last 16's!
